Want to defeat WhatsApp's single forward restrictions?

WhatsApp, Facebook's wildly popular Instant Messaging platform, in it's battle to slow 'fake news' has restricted the number of times content can be forwarded on it's platform to 5 persons/groups. In extreme circumstances, described as a piece of media getting 5 forwards away from it's originator, the app will reduce that restriction to just one.

So if you want to forward that juicy must-see media content, you have to go through the painful process of forwarding individually to each person 😭

Or you can use a WhatsApp 'share' feature instead. 🙄

Suddenly WhatsApp doesn't recognize this 'new' media and you are back to your original limits.

Of course, I'm not encouraging you to spread propoganda and other malicious content, just highlighting a funny oversight.

My cordless tools bring me joy in a time of uncertainty.

Last few weeks has taught me quite a bit. In the face of adversity a person's true character can shine through, and the ability to think creatively is a true super power.

... also I'm pretty handy when I need to be. My home office now has a 2nd work station, even if a little crude. 😁

Ramblings
1. Information Technology is no longer a special skill to have, but an essential tool in the modern workplace.
2. Calm and collected thoughts trump chaotic haste.
3. Lots of organizations talk the talk, but few actually walk the walk.
4. Every one of us has their crosses to carry, so try not to be an a**hole when you're interacting with others.
5. We still have a love affair with charisma and charm, over skill and ability. The balance hasn't been struck yet.
6. No one is above mistakes.
7. Employees should respect their relationship with their employers for what it is. In fact, it's time to change the mindset to a mutually beneficial business arrangement between entities.
8. In adversity, every business relationship will be stressed, and each party will need to make decisions in the interest of survival.
9. Cell phones / tablets are more than social media portals.
10. People all around the world are the same.

The Emperor's New Garbage.

So we've banned petroleum based single use plastics like cups, plates, knives me forks ... even straws. That's a good thing right??? Of course it is. I don't think anyone would reasonably say that plastic is the enemy, but our over reliance is apparent. Plastic is everywhereand allows an enhanced quality of life I can't imagine without it.

But our attitude to single use items hasn't changed, so what have we achieved? I see to say the net effect at a glance is zero.

I went to a concert recently and was saddened to see that there was absolutely no change in the amount of garbage we produce. Yes the kind of material has changed, but the volume hasn't. And when we dig into the details, most of the new materials being used do not decomposed in the conditions presented in the landfill.

What was even more troubling, for me at least, was when I saw an event sponsor sharing out hundreds if not thousands of inflatable branded knick knacks, which of course were left behind at the end of the event. Their function was to dominate the many photos at the event to keep the brand image alive and strong, but in reality its the same petroleum based single use plastics we're trying to fight.

What is our end game? Is it to reduce the amount of single use items coming into the country? Is it to reduce the volume of garbage hitting the landfills? Is it to reduce the garbage missing the landfill and getting into the natural environment and choking off wildlife. Or is there no real plan and we are just shooting in the dark?

How to have difficult conversations at work.

Over the years I've been forcing myself to speak, and I'm getting much better at it. One of the challenges that comes with talking while leading is managing those difficult conversations. Above are some useful tips.

Reply vs Reply All vs Reply None

As a meme master, I'm always excited to share my latest finds with friends and family. It's my way of spreading happiness throughout the world, one silly graphic at a time. The problem is however was sometimes people would tell me they've seen it already. I'm not sure why but it infuriated me. How could you selfishly dismiss all the effort I've put in to creating this carefully curated portfolio of pictorial masterpieces. It feels like an unnecessary wasteful response that at best adds no value, and at worse annoys the recipient.

The other place this happens a lot is at work when people respond to mass emails. Imagine an FYI email to notify all staff that it's someone's birthday. And then the reply all's start to pour in. And then the responses reminding people not to reply all come in, then the reply all apologies start to come in. In minutes your inbox explodes with unread mail that you have to sift through to determine if there is any useful info. The risk now is you can assume it's just a useless thread and delete all, but unfortunately some nugget is caught up somewhere within the chaos.

With modern instant one to one communication, this problem is exponentially more difficult to manage. We share info not just with multiple people, but over multiple mediums, and in effect generate 'tonnes' of information waste. The catch is that we don't know whether that alert/ping/buzz is waste or not until we check it, causing us to waste lots of time and increase stress levels.

To take control we need to understand our information sources and understand where the overlap occurs. Once we understand this we can more effectively manage where and how we take information in.

Do you know when to reply all, one or none??

20190427 - Alright here we go again

I've been promising to restart blogging for a while, and I have a ton of experiences to share now.

LGSSC was always meant to share my own experiences in a candid manner without too many filters. I'm hoping that through my experiences someone somewhere can glean something useful.

It won't be well structured most the time because it'll follow the format that my mind produces content, which is generally chaotic and random. It will from time to time ramble off topic. But it'll always be honest.

Wish me luck.
