Waiting for Superman

So I stumbled across this documentary about education reform in the US and i found it extremely interesting because it 1. highlights that the problems we have in Bim aren't isolated to Bim and 2. there are people who have semed to make some progress with the problem.

They've highlighted some key things

  • Great teachers are key
  • An enabling environment is essential
  • We must all act
Wonder how hard it would be to get similar program going in Bim. I think our education system is screwed for a simple reason, we shooting in the wrong direction. I'm not convinced that gaining an 'education' for higher pay without making a higher contribution can be maintained, yet its the mantra of the current student or prospect. Education needs to be viewed as a tool to advance some cause otherwise it will just be another cliche in our monotonous  lives.

Secondly, we need to accept the fact that education is no longer restricted to the classroom. With the technology that teems around us, we need to start using it for more than Angry Birds and Facebook. No longer are we bound to libraries, university and college campuses; in order to access the information we need. Online tutorials in Youtube, lectures on Podcasts, books and scholarly material on Google Scholar. But some people with all there iPads, Blackberry and Android smartphones, netbooks, etc can't even seem to open the onboard dictionary.

Anyway, here is the trailer. Full movie is available on Netflix [not sure where else but i sure you can dig around and find it].

Feel free to explain why my thoughts are whack ...
